The method involves calculating an idealized wheel guiding force to a time period or a force corresponding to an idealized wheel guiding force. Another idealized wheel guiding force is determined to another time period or the force to the latter idealized wheel guiding force. The frictional force amplitude is determined only if a real wheel guiding force or the force between the both time periods is constant. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining frictional force amplitude in a steering system of a motor vehicle, particularly during operation of the motor vehicle.
