A refrigerator and a method for controlling operation thereof are provided to control a refrigerant of each evaporator with one three-way valve while cooling a freezing compartment in an indirect cooling method, and reduce the number of capillary tubes connected to each evaporator. A plurality of evaporators(40,42) are installed correspondingly to a plurality of storage compartments(32,34,36). A refrigerant passage is formed by connecting two or more evaporators in series and connecting the rest of the evaporators to the evaporators connected in series. A controller controls a direction of a refrigerant flowing in the plurality of evaporators to cool the plurality of storage compartments in combination of direct cooling and indirect cooling. A refrigerant direction control device controls a direction of a refrigerant flowing in the plurality of evaporators to control partial storage compartments in a cooling method different from the rest of storage compartments.
