Apparatus for break-spinning comprises a shaft rotating in a housing which has an inlet for fibres and an outlet for unwanted matter; the shaft has an opening on its surface within the housing which communicates by a passageway with an axial outlet, means being provided to establish intimate contact at the opening between films fed through the housing with an end of yarn extruding from the opening to the axial outlet through the passageway. The means may be suction applied to a bore in the shaft at 17 Fig. 2 not shown, the opening being covered by a grid 12; or it may comprise liquid applied to a porous screen replacing the grid, the screen co-operating with an idling roller of nonstick plastics material. The passageway is made in the thickness of the shaft and enters the surface from the opening tangentially and at right angles to the shaft axis; it then spirals steeply before meeting the axial outlet (Fig. 1 not shown). The housing comprises a block with a bore which is a sliding fit on the shaft; the inlet 23b extends into the nip of the outlet rolls of a drafting set and is equal in width to these rolls, and the waste outlet 23a communicates with an additional source of suction. The inlet and outlet lead out of an enlargement of the bore in the front face of the block, the face being closed by a cover removably hung on pins 25 and having bars to keep the fibres as close as possible to the grid 12. A false-twist device 30 is disposed between the axial outlet and the withdrawing rollers. |
