Apparatus for conveying a liquid, e.g. electrolyte in a fuel cell, or corrosive liquid, from a low level reservoir 22 to a high level reservoir 27 comprises chambers 19, 25 connected by reducing valve 30 to a pressurized gas container 31, e.g. oxygen for flushing the fuel cell, and by non-return valve 21 to reservoir 22. In operation, with liquid at level 32 in chamber 19, gas entering chamber 19 from container 31 passes to atmosphere via chamber connection 24, chamber 25, pipe 26 and reservoir 27. The head of liquid in reservoir 22 opens valve 21, and the liquid rises in chamber 19 to level 33, at which syphon 23 operates to discharge liquid from chamber 19 into chamber 25. The liquid in chamber 25 prevents the gas from passing to atmosphere, and the gas pressure above the liquid in chambers 19 and 25 rises and acts to close non- return valve 21 and to force the liquid in chambers 19 and 25 into reservoir 27. When all of the liquid has been discharged from pipe 26, the gas is free to pass to atmosphere and the pressure in chambers 19 and 25 falls, permitting valve 21 to open and another cycle to begin. In Fig.2, (not shown), chamber 25 is incorporated within chamber 19. The gas spaces of reservoirs 22 and 27 may be connected for pressure equalisation.
