A rotating spinning ring assembly of the kind having an air bearing is constructed such that the clearance between the stationary air bearing housing element 20 and the ring element 30 is greater in the region of the air inlet which is at least partly porous than between the remainder of the bearing surfaces so preventing blockage of the air inlet by wiping engagement between adjacent ring and housing surfaces during initial and terminal phases of operation. The air inlet passage 27 is preferably located midway between the exit ends of the passages for equalizing air flows through the passageways and is covered by a porous annular element 22. Baffles 33 35 are provided at the exits of the passageways. The housing may alternatively consist almost entirely of porous material 48 which is coated either externally or internally with a non- porous material 47, 50 except in the region of the air inlet.
