[Also in Division F2] Two sheets 40, 42 are secured together by a fastener comprising a rivet 10 and a collar 20. With the shank 14 in aligned bores in the sheets 40, 42 the rivet head 12 is forced into the sheet 40 until its end face is flush with the sheet surface. An annular rib 16 on the head undersurface controls cold flow of the sheet 40 material to force it into an annular groove 18 in the rivet shank 14 and to create a residual compressive stress around the hole in the sheet 40. The collar 20 is placed over the end 19 of the shank extending from the sheet 42 and forced against the sheet to embed an annular rib 28 therein to create a residual compressive stress in the sheet 42 around the hole. Finally the shank end 19 is upset to grip the collar and to expand the shank radially to develop an interference fit between the shank and the bores in the sheets 40, 42. |
