A number of rods are bundled in a predetermined pattern. At least one preselected rod is formed of a different material to permit removal from the other rod material (e.g. by dissolution). Each preselected rod is disposed in the pattern to correspond to a preselected configuration. Several preselected rods may be disposed together to give a different cross section (e.g. polyonal, star-shaped etc). The bundle is then constricted to reduced the preselected rods to a preselected cross section and to unify the other rods into a structure. The preselected rods are then removed to define passages in the structure.
