[Also in Division F2] A positive clutch for transmitting torque between a chuck 10 and a tool 16 and for retaining the tool in the chuck, comprises conical rollers 27 mounted in slots 24 in the chuck and co-operating with flats 23 formed on a tapering shoulder 22 of the tool 16. The rollers 27 are held inwardly in driving engagement with the flats 23 by a sleeve 31 which is mounted on the chuck body 12 with limited rotational play permitted by a groove 37 in the sleeve 31 which receives a pin 36 fast with the chuck body 12. A cup member 49 is freely rotatably mounted on the tool 16 and has limited axial play between a snap ring 55 on the tool and its shoulder 22. When the tool is in the chuck the cup has a cylindrical shell 50 extending over the sleeve 31, and the shell and sleeve have portions 56, 57 of reduced diameter which are in registration when the tool is fully seated in the chuck. To remove the tool from the chuck the cup 49 is moved downwardly as permitted by the axial play and the reduced diameter portion 56 frictionally engages the sleeve 31, and since the cup 49 is held by the operator the sleeve 31 is braked and rotates relative to the driven chuck body 12 against the bias of a spring 42 until the pin 36 engages an end of the groove 37 and pockets 38 in the sleeve 31 register with the rollers 27 which are cammed outwardly or moved outwardly under centrifugal force to release the tool. |
