A multi-cycle closed cycle hot gas engine comprises at least three hot chambers with associated heaters belonging to different cycles and corresponding cold chambers with associated coolers wherein both faces of each piston are operative one being movable in the hot chamber of one cycle while the other is movable in the cold chamber of a different cycle and wherein for each cycle there are provided two piston faces of which one is movable in a hot chamber while the other is movable in a cold chamber these two movements being separated in phase to an extent suitable for obtaining power output from the engine. The word piston is defined. It does not include a displacer as disclosed in U.S.A. Specification 1,879.563 referred to. As shown the top surface of each piston 51-54 works in and varies the volume of a hot chamber while the lower surface works in and varies the volume of a cold chamber for one of the other cylinders. Each cylinder has a heater 67 regenerator 68 and cooler 69. In order to reverse the engine by means of the valves shown channels 63-66 connecting the coolers to associated cold chambers beneath the pistons can be closed and other channels (shown dotted) 83-86 can be brought into use. Tubular projections 71-74 on the pistons carry pins 75-78 to which connecting rods are articulated. In a modification the crankshaft may be replaced by a swash plate the cylinders being arranged around and parallel to the swash plate shaft. In this arrangement short connecting channels may be used. The engine may be arranged so that five or six cycles are simultaneously performed. The engine may be constructed in the shape of a V.
