Aromatic polymers containing oxygen and sulphur, or intermediates in the preparation of such polymers, are produced by treating bis-(4-fluorophenyl)sulphone with an equivalent amount of an alkali hydroxide in the presence of a polar liquid which is an ionising solvent for alkali phenolates and is stable under reaction conditions. The parent patent (BE. 687,344) claims the use of bis(4-halogenophenyl) sulphones. The high temps. required (>200 deg.C.) precludes the use of otherwise excellent solvents such as DMSO. Much lower temps. are required for the fluoro compound and DMSO can be used.
|
