[Also in Divisions B1-B2] Polyurethane coatings are prepared by reacting in a solvent organic polyisocyanates with aliphatic.cycloaliphatic di- and polyols which are obtained by the hydrogenation of addition products of phenols or phenol derivatives having at least one exchangeable hydrogen atom to (A) unsaturated, straight- or branched-chain alcohols with 10 to 48 carbon atoms or their alkoxylated products or to (B) unsaturated straight- or branched-chain carboxylic acids with 10 to 48 carbon atoms or their esters with alcohols containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and/or reaction products of these aliphatic-cycloaliphatic di- and polyols with ethylene oxide or propylene oxide. Suitable phenols or phenol derivatives are phenol, polyhydric phenols, alkyl phenols, halogenated phenols, and polynuclear phenols. Alcohols suitable for forming the addition products are decenol, dodecenol, hexadecenol, oleyl alcohol, linoleyl alcohol, linolenyl alcohol and particularly alcohols obtained from natural oils, fats and waxes and unsaturated Guerbet alcohols. Carboxylic acids suitable for forming the addition products are undecylenic, oleic, elaidic, erucic, brassidic, tall oil fatty acids, linoleic, elaeostearic and linolenic acids, dimeric fatty acids and particularly acids obtained from natural waxes, oils or fats, and the methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl and butyl esters of such acids. The phenols or phenol derivatives may be reacted with the alcohols or acids or their esters in the presence of aluminium silicates activated with mineral acids with a pH value of 3 to 5, as catalysts, and the resulting product hydrogenated in a conventional manner, suitably in the presence of a powdered copper-chromium oxide catalyst activated with barium chromate. The phenol addition products or their hydrogenated derivatives may suitably be reacted with 1 to 6 mol. of ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, followed by hydrogenation if necessary. Conventional aliphatic or aromatic polyisocyanates may be used. Suitable solvents are ethyl acetate, ethylene glycol diacetate, benzene, toluene, xylene, methylene chloride and dioxan. Substantially stoichiometric quantities of polyisocyanate may be used, but when ethylene oxide or propylene oxide addition products are used an excess of polyisocyanate up to an NCO : OH ratio of 4: 1 is recommended. Cross-linking of the products may be achieved by including trimethylolpropane in the isocyanate/polyol reaction mixture, and catalysts, especially triethylamine, may be used.</p>
