Compositions comprising an ultraviolet radiation-absorbing polymer

Disclosed is a UV-absorbing polymer, said UV-absorbing polymer comprising the polymerization reaction product of: a first ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprising a first pendant group that comprises a UV -absorbing moiety, and a second pendant group selected from the group consisting of H, or C1 to C12 alkyl; and a second ethylenically unsaturated monomer selected from the group consisting of monomethacryloxypropyl polydimethylsiloxane and methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane, wherein the number of repeat units of said first reacted monomer per molecule is from about 1 to about 6000 and the number of repeating units of said second reacted monomer per molecule is from about 2 to about 6300, said UV-absorbing polymer having a weight average molecular weight of at least 2000 and comprising at least 5 mole per cent of said first pendant group. Also disclosed is the UV absorbing polymer in a blend including a second UV absorbing polymer wherein the blend is capable of providing both synergistic SPF and PFA protection over a mass per cent range of the first and second UV absorbing polymers of at least 40 per cent. Also disclosed is a method of protecting mammalian skin or hair from UV radiation comprising topically applying the composition to skin or hair as a sunscreen or sunblock.
