The use of an oxygenated haemoglobin solution for treating an organ under an ischemic condition that is formulated to be administered to the organ by retrograde infusion. The oxygenated haemoglobin solution includes polymerized haemoglobin wherein 80 percent by weight or greater is oxyhaemoglobin.
