A tester for cigarettes wherein a pressure differential is created radially across the cigarette to detect a leaky wrapping, comprises a circumferentially fluted carrier drum which co-operates with a circumferentially fluted closure drum, said flutes being axially disposed and carrying one cigarette each. The two drums rotate about parallel axes at the same peripheral speed and where the two drums cooperate, the flutes from each drum together momentarily define a chamber around the cigarette, terminated at or near the ends of the cigarette by seal portions partly defined by each drum, the cigarette being tested for leaks whilst in this chamber. An apparatus suitable for carrying out the testing process, is shown in Fig. 1 wherein a carrier drum 1 co-operates with closure drum 2, the latter being held by gravity in contact with drum 1, but being pivotally mounted on a hollow shaft 3. Suction for testing is applied from a fan via shaft 3 to a suction chamber in drum 2, the suction being applied via the port 50 to a cigarette contained in the chamber which is formed by the flutes of drums 1 and 2 momentarily co-operating. If the cigarette in the momentarily formed chamber has a leaky wrapper, a flow of air to the suction source via the leaky wrapper will be created, said flow being indicated by a pressure drop at the ends of the cigarette which pressure drop is detected by a transducer 40 (Fig. 2, not shown) which activates a mechanism to eject the faulty cigarette. |
