Provided is the use of chaperonin 10 (Cpn10) in the manufacture of a medicament for treating or preventing a disease or condition arising from an infection by a viral or bacterial pathogen in a subject, wherein the disease or condition is selected from cancer, an autoimmune disorder, inflammation, allergy, and asthma. The Cpn10 modulates the level of cell surface expression of at least one MHC molecule in the subject, particularly HLA-DR, HLA-DP and HLA-DQ. Further provided is an in vitro method of identifying compounds that modulate an immune response by screening for MHC molecule modulation in the presence of Cpn10.
