<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water treatment apparatus capable of reducing the load of a filter provided in a downstream side by efficiently decomposing organic matter contained in water to be treated such as organic matter-containing wastewater or contaminated water and capable of avoiding the corrosion of piping or the like. <P>SOLUTION: The water treatment apparatus 12 includes a large caliper flow channel 22 for pressurizing water 15a to be treated containing organic matter to predetermined pressure, a small caliper flow channel 23, a pressure pump 24, a laser beam source 25 for irradiating the pressurized water 15a to be treated with a laser beam 27 to heat the same to predetermined temperature and a condensing lens 26. The laser beam 27 emitted from the laser beam source 25 is condensed to the region 29, which is spaced apart from the flow channel wall in the flow channel in the small caliper flow channel 23 through which the pressurized water 15a to be treated flows, by the condensing lens 26 to heat the wastewater 15a in the region 29 to thereby produce supercritical water or subcritical water.
