The invention comprises compounds of the formula where R is alkyl C 1-10 ; alkyl C 1-8 substituted by bromine, chlorine, hydroxy, alkoxy, alkoxycarbonyl C 2-4 , cyano; aryl C 1-10 ; phenyl substituted by chlorine, fluorine, bromine, alkoxy C 1-5 , alkyl C 1-6 , nitro, trifluoromethyl, 2,3- tetramethylene or 2,3-trimethylene; aralkyl C 7-13 optionally substituted by chlorine, nitro, alkyl or alkoxy; tetrahydronaphthylalkyl ; alkenyl C 3-8 ; alkynyl C 3-8 ; cycloalkyl C 3-12 optionally substituted by bromine, chlorine, alkoxy C 1-3 , alkyl C 1-4 ; cycloalkenyl C 4-12 optionally substituted by bromine, chlorine, alkoxy C 1-3 , alkyl C 1-4 ; cycloalkylalkyl C 4-13 ; cycloalkenylalkyl C 5-13 ; cycloalkylalkyl C 5-14 substituted by bromine, chlorine, alkoxy C 1-5 , alkyl C 1-4 ; cycloalkenylalkyi C 5-14 substituted by bromine, chlorine, alkoxy C 1-3 alkyl C 1-4 , cyano; X is alkyl C 1-4 , halogen, alkoxy C 1-3 , -thioalkyl C 1-3 ; R 2 is alkoxy C 1-4 , cycloalkyloxy C 5-6 or -NH.CONHR 4 where R 4 is phenyl optionally substituted by bromine, chlorine, fluorine, alkoxy C 1-5 , alkyl C 1-6 , nitro, trifluoromethyl, 2,3-tetramethylene, 2,3-trimethylene; with the provisos that when R 2 is R is phenyl or substituted phenyl and that when X is alkyl R and R 4 are not both phenyl. They are prepared by reacting an R-substituted urea with an alpha-X-substituted acetoacetic acid ester in the presence of an acid catalyst in an inert water-immiscible solvent. The compounds have herbicidal activity and may be formulated as compositions, together with solid or liquid carrier and, if desired, surface active agents, wetting, dispersing and emulsifying agents and also other herbicides. They are applied in the form of dusts, granules, concentrates, emulsions or solutions to the infested area either before or after infestation.</p> |
