Novel phenanthridine derivatives of the formula and their acid addition salts, wherein R is C 1-6 alkyl, may be prepared by (1) reaction of a compound of the formula wherein X is an acid residue of a reactive ester, with a 1-alkyl piperazine, (2) alkylation of the nitrogen of the piperazine ring of 6-(piperazin- 1<SP>1</SP>-yl) phenanthridine, (3) reaction of 6-aminophenanthridine with a compound of the formula (4) reaction of a compound of formula with an amine of formula RNH 2 . Pharmaceutical compositions comprising the compounds of the invention and a carrier have anti-depressant and muscle-relaxing activity and when R is methyl they have anti-convulsant activity, and are administered orally, parenterally or rectally.
