Improved Backing for Carpets and Process for Producing same.

A fibrous web is coated with and penetrated by a thermoplastic selected from polyethylenes having a molecular weight of from 10,000- 20,000, stereo block polypropylenes; or by a blend of a first thermoplastic component having a molecular weight less than 10,000 selected from microcrystalline waxes, petroleum waxes, paraffin waxes, and olefin polymers and copolymers having a molecular weight of less than 10,000 with a second thermoplastic component selected from olefin polymers and copolymers having a molecular weight of more than 20,000. The thermoplastic is applied to the fibrous web and then pressure applied so that the thermoplastic penetrates therethrough. At least one of the thermoplastics may be applied as a powder; and heated to melting; and solidified by cooling whilst applying pressure to the web. Both thermoplastics may be polyethylenes and the heating is conducted at a temperature of from 300 to 550‹F. The thermoplastics may be applied separately to the web. The first thermoplastic may be appled to the web and melted thereon before the second thermoplastic is applied and melted; both thermoplastics may be polyethylenes, the first being melted on the web by heating to 300-450‹F and the second by heating at 400- 550‹F; both thermoplastics may be applied as powders. Alternatively the polyolefines may be applied as a melt by extrusion. The fibrous web may be textile or a carpet e.g. a looped pile tufted carpet containing rayon and nylon or a continuous filament nylon carpet.
