[Also in Division G1] A grinding machine comprises a grinding wheel G which is automatically traversed backwards and forwards over a workpiece (F) between points determined by the settings of potentiometers in an electric correspondence control system (see Division G1). The grinding wheel is carried by a boom and is displaceable vertically by an hydraulic cylinder 78 and horizontally in a direction at right angles to the traversing movement by a cylinder (40) acting via a movement-doubling rack-andpinion arrangement (44-48), Fig. 2 (not shown). The carriage is driven in the traversing direction by a rotary hydraulic motor (150), the position of the carriage being sensed by a potentiometer (194), the wiper of which is connected to a gear 200 co-operating with a rack 202.
