<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a desulfurizing agent which contributes to stable production of extremely-low sulfur steel while minimizing the influence on erosion of refractory, and to provide a desulfurization method for hot metal using the desulfurizing agent. <P>SOLUTION: The desulfurizing agent for hot metal contains, in a mass ratio and relative to CaO 1, Al<SB POS="POST">2</SB>O<SB POS="POST">3</SB>: 0.30-0.8, Na<SB POS="POST">2</SB>O: 0.04-0.35, SiO<SB POS="POST">2</SB>: 0.05-0.30 and MgO: 0.05-0.44, and further relative to MgO 1, Na<SB POS="POST">2</SB>O: 0.50-3.00, the total of CaO, Al<SB POS="POST">2</SB>O<SB POS="POST">3</SB>, Na<SB POS="POST">2</SB>O, SiO<SB POS="POST">2</SB>and MgO being 90% by mass or more, and the balance of unavoidable impurities.
