A sliver suitable for spinning is produced by cutting a tow into successive rhomboids-e.g. by using cutting rollers-forming a coherent fibre sliver therefrom-e.g. by gill drafting and compression crimping-, doubling a plurality of such slivers, and roller drafting and then gill drafting the doubled slivers. The slivers may also be compression crimped after one or more of the roller and gill drafting steps. The coherent fibre sliver may also be gill drafted before roller drafting. It is stated that the fibre number/staple curve (Fig. 8 not shown) for the sliver exceeds that for a long staple, well-combed cotton of approximately the same length of longest fibre. |
