Provided is a method for producing a thermoplastic resin composition by melt kneading (a) a poly(phenylene sulfide) resin and (b) a polyetherimide resin or polyethersulfone resin, wherein the thermoplastic resin composition contains 99 to 1 wt.% of component (a) and 1 to 99 wt.% of component (b), with the total content of component (a) and component (b) being 100 wt.%. In the melt kneading process, melt kneading is carried out using an extruder provided with an elongational flow zone, which is a zone in which the resins are melt kneaded while being subjected to elongational flow, and an inflow effect pressure drop across the elongational flow zone is 50 to 1000 kg/cm2. With this production method, a thermoplastic resin composition having excellent low temperature ductility and high temperature creep characteristics is provided.
