PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a near-field light generating element capable of improving efficiency of generating near-field light by highly accurately positioning a near-field light generation part and a core; and to provide a method for generating the near-field light generating element, a near-field optical head, a method for manufacturing the near-field optical head, and an information record reproducer.

SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the near-field light generating element includes: a first clad forming step for forming a first clad 24a on a substrate 120; a near-field light generation part forming step for forming a metal film base material 151 on the first clad 24a; a core forming step for forming a core base material in such a manner as covering the metal film base material 151; a patterning step for patterning the core base material and the metal film base material 151 to form a core 23 and a metal film 51; and a second clad forming step for forming a second clad 24b in such a manner as clamping the core 23 between itself and the first clad 24a. In the patterning step, the core base material and the metal film base material 151 are collectively patterned in the same step.
