<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a permanent magnet embedded rotor that can effectively utilize a magnet torque and a reluctance torque without reducing buried permanent magnets. <P>SOLUTION: A substantially cylindrical rotor core 81 includes a plurality of permanent magnet embedding holes 82. A plurality of permanent magnets 83 are embedded in each of the plurality of permanent magnet embedding holes 82 of the rotor core 81. Each of the plurality of permanent magnet embedding holes 72 includes an embedding part 72a for embedding the permanent magnets 73 and air gaps 72b and 72c that are adjacent to the outer peripheral surface of a rotor core 71 at the both ends in the circumferential direction of the embedding part 72a and do not have the permanent magnets 73 embedded therein.
