<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device capable of effectively enhancing contrast feeling. <P>SOLUTION: A projector includes: a light source lamp 201; liquid crystal panels 212, 214 and 217 for modulating light from the light source lamp 201 based on a video signal; a variable diaphragm 205 for narrowing light directing to the liquid crystal panels 212, 214 and 217; a central processing unit (CPU) 407 for controlling the variable diaphragm 205; a luminance detection circuit 403b for obtaining an average picture level (APL) of a projected image to be output to the CPU 407; and an image determination circuit 403a part for determining which of a still image or a moving image the projected image is. The CPU 407 operates the variable diaphragm 205 when the APL is smaller than a specific value and operates the variable diaphragm 205 so as to narrow light as the APL becomes smaller.
