ACTIVE PART FOR AN ENCAPSULATED SURGE ARRESTER,ENCAPSULATED SURGE ARRESTER, AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING THE ACTIVE PART

An encapsulated surge diverter has a varistor stack (3) between a high tension (4) and earth (5) electrode. A field control element (6) made of a polymeric matrix with a filler is mounted directly on the varistor stack (3). It has a dielectric value between 5 and 45 in an alternating field up to 100 Hz and a non-linear current-voltage characteristic. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) A method of manufacturing the active part of a surge diverter that involves attaching the filed control element (6) to the varistor stack (3) or to the surrounding insulator; (2) An encapsulated surge diverter containing such an active part. The field control element can extend over the whole length of the varistor stack and can incorporate additional insulating layers. It is made by casting, injection molding or shrink-winding. The remainder of the capsule (1) is filled with a solid, liquid or gaseous insulator (13).
