A low-cost display unit is provided for displaying way-finding information to a traveller in a public travel-related area such as an airport. The display unit includes: a communication interface that facilitates the receiving of travel-related information; a machine-readable marking reader, such as a barcode scanner, that determines the presence of a travel document having a machine readable marking, the reader scanning and decoding the machine-readable marking wherein the marking contains encoded traveled-related information pertaining to the traveller, such as a flight departure gate; and a display control unit that receives the decoded marking, determines the traveller's destination in the public travel-related area from the decoded marking, determines a path that the traveller should travel to reach the destination, and displays the determined path to the traveller on the low-cost display unit.
