1,185,065. Diagnosing syphilis. BAXTER LABORATORIES Inc. 7 Sept., 1967 [29 Sept., 1966], No. 40857/67. Heading B1X. A reagent for the diagnosis of syphilis comprises polystyrene latex particles having particle size from 0.1 to 0.35 microns and coated with cardiolipin and Reiter protein antigens. Preferred concentrations are 0.007 mg to 0.187 mg cardiolipin and 0.0005 mg to 0.03 mg Reiter protein per mg latex solids. The cardiolipin antigen is a composition comprising cardiolipin, cholesterol and lecithin. The Reiter protein is a standardized preparation obtained from Reiter treponemes. In an Example, the latex and the cardiolipin antigen are incubated in a glycine-saline-EDTA buffer at pH 8.2, the Reiter protein is added and the mixture is incubated again. The particles are centrifuged and resuspended in the above buffer plus choline chloride.
