[Also in Division G2] The invention relates to a cyanine dye of the formula wherein n is 0 or 1; R is alkyl, substituted alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or substituted aryl; R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are each alkyl, alkoxycarbonylalkyl, aryl or substituted aryl; R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are each H, alkyl or alkoxy of 1-4 C atoms, or halogen; and Z completes a thiazole, benzothiazole, naphththiazole, thionaphtheno-7<SP>1</SP>,6<SP>1</SP>,4,5-thiazole, oxazole, benzoxazole, naphthoxazole, selenazole, benzoselenazole, naphthoselenazole, thiazoline, 2- or 4-pyridine, 2- or 4-quinoline, 1- or 3-isoquinoline, 3,3-dialkylindolenine, imidazole, benzimidazole or naphthimidazole nucleus and X- is an anion, or, where R is sulphoalkyl or carboxyalkyl and X- is hydroxyl, the anhydro form of such a dye. The dyes may be prepared by condensing the usual heterocyclic quaternary salts with an enamine or enaminium salt of one of the formulµ The dyes sensitize photographic emulsions [see Heading G2C].
