A mixture of aggregate and bituminous binder is compacted to 80-98% of maximum density, followed by first heating for 4-32 hrs. at 175-260 degrees C and then for 1-80 hrs. (pref. 8-20 hrs) in a moist atmosphere (75-100% saturated) at 100-260 degrees C (pref. stream 107-150 degrees C) and finally cooling in the same atmosphere to room temperature. The mixture is more specifically 94 wt. % aggregate (sand/line/6 wt. % asphalt, compacted to 90%, heated for 16 hrs. at about 200 degrees C, 12 hrs. in stream at 121 degrees C and cooled. Units so made are dimensionally very stable, much lower internal stress occurs, hence no cracking due to shrinkage when assembled into larger structures.
|
