A cover (1) has a base (2) to which a vessel (5) can be nonrotatably attached and a cap (3) which is rotatable and has, via a gear (4) arranged in the cover (1) and having a transmission ratio of 4:1, an operative connection to a shaft (6) and carries two blades (7a,b) which are staggered axially relatively to one another and have cutting edges (8) on both longitudinal edges. After the vessel has been filled with material to be cut and has been connected, the apparatus can be picked up and tilted and used for uniform comminution of material to be cut, in particular vegetables, by mutual rotation of the vessel (5) and of the base (2), on the one hand, and of the cap (3), on the other hand, with alternately opposite directions of rotation. It is particularly suitable for cutting of onions into small cubes.
