The method involves supplying power to an active winding to rotate a rotor (11) of an electromechanical actuator (1), and determining angular position information of the rotor by observation of currents and/or voltages in non-active winding. The angular position information is used to control the active winding, where angular position information detected by an angular position sensor (30) is utilized during normal operation of the actuator, and the angular position information obtained by observation of currents and/or voltages in the non-active winding is utilized upon failure of the sensor. An independent claim is also included for an electromechanical actuator comprising a rotor.
