The device has thermochromic pigments (4, 5) having the capacity to change color or to be colored based on increase in the temperature. A support layer permits contact of the thermochromic pigments on an exhaust pipe (2) or an exhaust manifold or an adjacent zone assigned to each cylinder of an internal combustion engine, where all or part of the thermochromic pigments are irreversible i.e. the color obtained by rise in temperature is retained even after fall in temperature to which the pigments are subjected. An independent claim is also included for a method for diagnosing operation, failure or partial operation of one or more cylinders of an internal combustion engine.
