Prepn of fibrous material similar to leather

A fibrous sheet, e.g. a fleece of cellulose fibres, is saturated with a liquid which contains dissolved or dispersed high molecular wt. polymers, e.g. aqueous dispersions of acrylate or acrylate/vinyl mixed polymers, and if necessary a sensitising agent such as benzoinisopropyl ether or potassium chromate. It is important that the liquid contains no unsaturated monomers. The sheet is cooled to a temp. at which crystallisation is (at least) started. The sheet is irradiated with UV or electrons. The solvent is thawed and separated.
