<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protection circuit that can prevent overvoltage damage to an element by suppressing a counter voltage more effectively. <P>SOLUTION: A protection circuit 2 of a first embodiment includes a variable resistance switch 10, an overcurrent detection section 20, a control voltage application section 30, a capacitance section 40, a control terminal voltage modulation section 50, and an external terminal 11. The variable resistance switch 10 has a control terminal 10a, a first terminal 10b, and a second terminal 10c.
