The method involves assigning hardware variants and a control unit (10) to a domestic appliance, where a process sequence is stored in the control unit. The hardware variants are detected by the control unit. A parameter set for the process sequence is defined based on the detection of the variants. The process sequence is tested by the parameter set during production phase and/or in case of a service call. Information about the variants is stored in the control unit, and an error signal is produced in case of an error at the process sequence. An independent claim is also included for a domestic appliance comprising a control unit.
