<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device capable of detecting the service life of a light source and an image display device. <P>SOLUTION: An optical device comprises: a threshold current setting part which sets a threshold current value from the light source temperature detected by temperature detection means; an estimated service life calculation part which calculates the estimated service life of the light source based on the light source temperature and the threshold current value; a driving current control part which controls the driving current so that the driving current converges within a predetermined control range; a convergence determination part which determines whether the driving current converged within a predetermined time and within the control range; a service life determination part which determines whether the accumulated use time of the light source reached the service life of the light source by comparing the accumulated use time of the light source with the estimated service life of the light source; a convergence range adjustment part which can perform step-by-step adjustment to shift the control range by a predetermined amount in the direction where a driving current value becomes small; and a driving stop part which stops the driving of the light source. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
