PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface light emitting element that uniformly emits light at high luminance suitable for an image reading device and to provide an image reading device using this.

SOLUTION: The surface light emitting element includes: a light emitting layer provided in a belt form; a substrate supporting the light emitting layer and transparent to light emitted by the light emitting element; a first electrode provided between the light emitting layer and the substrate and transparent to the light emitted by the light emitting element; a connection pad provided along the lengthwise direction of the light emitting layer and electrically connected to the first electrode; and a second electrode provided with the light emitting layer between the first electrode and itself and configured such that the light emitted by the light emitting layer is reflected in the direction of the first electrode.
