In a device for grinding scissors, knives and similar tools, having a grinding wheel coupled to an electric motor and a guide member adapted to be located in a position relative to the grinding wheel in which at least one surface of the guide member forms a guide surface for one type of tool to be ground, the guide member is movable relative to the grinding wheel and is adjustable in different positions which each correspond to different supporting surfaces of of the guide member. A grinding wheel 4 is mounted on the shaft 3 of an electric motor 2; the wheel and motor are contained in a housing 1 having a base 6 and a reduced diameter portion 5 accommodating a motor-controlling switch 7. A cut-away portion 8 in the housing wall gives access to the grinding wheel. The housing has a stud 9 on which is rotatably mounted a circular guide member 10 having radial slots 11 symmetrically distributed round its circumference and bounded on either side by surfaces 12 for supporting the articles to be ground. The shapes, dimensions and slopes relative to the grinding wheel of the various supporting surfaces 12 are different and adapted to diverse kinds of tool, e.g. knives, scissors, chisels and screwdrivers which have different grinding angles. For grinding a tool, the guide member 10 is rotated so that the desired supporting surface 12 is directed to the grinding wheel 4 through the cut-away 8. Instead of using a separate guide member, a part of the housing may move relative to the remainder of the housing and be provided with supporting surfaces. The grinding wheel 4 may be external to the housing 1, the cut-away 8 being then dispensed with entirely or in part. The guide member may be in the form of an elongate strip 13 displaceable in the direction of its length to move the various supporting surfaces formed in it to a position above the grinding wheel. The guide member may be held in the different positions by a ball detent 14. |
