The method involves detecting a distance from a detector to an identification mark (31) on a product or on a pallet (12). Another distance is detected from another detector to another identification mark (32) on the product or on the pallet. An associated product or a corresponding pallet is determined by referencing the former distance having a predetermined product-specific reference value.
