An intermediate circuit capacitor (C) is connected in parallel to the energy store (7). During the charging mode, at least one current and/or one voltage is monitored at the input, at the output, and/or within the charging circuit (15), and/or a function of a control unit (5, 12) of the rectifier (9) and/or the unit (1, 2) operated as a step-up converter is monitored. If the at least one current exceeds a prescribed current threshold or the at least one voltage exceeds a prescribed voltage threshold, or if a malfunction of the control unit (5, 12) of the rectifier (9) and/or the unit (1, 2) operated as a step-up unit is detected, then the charging circuit (15) is switched to a neutral mode in which a branch of the controllable rectifier (9) and all circuit elements (3d-3f) that can be controlled in step-up mode of the unit (1, 2) operated as a step-up converter are bypassed.
