698,345. Plywood planks. PHELPS, E. H. Aug. 8, 1951 [Dec. 4, 1950], No. 29646/50. Class 145 (ii). [Also in Group XXXIII] Plywood planks especially for boat-building have an oblique grain layer or layers secured to a layer or layers with a longitudinally running grain, the oblique layer or layers being arranged so that the direction of grain is different at different ends of the same plank. Fig. 3 shows straight grain layers 1, 3, with an oblique layer composed of two butt-jointed veneers 2a, 2b. A scarfed joint suitable for assembling a five-ply plank is shown in Fig. 4. If several oblique-grained layers are used they can be arranged with a successively increasing oblique grain angle as shown in Fig. 7. The joints of the individual layers are butted and staggered as shown by the dotted lines. According to the Provisional Specification other curved bodies, for example caravan and vehicle bodies and aircraft cabins, may be made from the planks. |
