<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve adequate automatic stopping of an engine by performing automatic engine stop that meets an intention of a driver. <P>SOLUTION: An ECU 30 automatically stops the engine 10 when a predetermined stopping condition is satisfied while the engine is driven, and after the engine is stopped, the ECU 30 restarts the engine 10 when a predetermined restart condition is satisfied. The predetermined stopping condition includes a decrease of a vehicle speed to a predetermined stop permitting speed. The ECU 30 detects a change range of a brake operation amount under an operation of the brake by the driver during a predetermined deceleration period from a start of the deceleration of the vehicle until the vehicle speed reaches below the stop permitting speed.
