A catalyst for an air electrode, an electrode containing the catalyst for a fuel cell, a membrane electrode assembly containing the electrode, a direct methanol fuel cell containing the membrane electrode assembly, and a method for preparing the catalyst are provided to lower the reactivity to the crossover methanol, to prevent the deterioration of oxygen reduction and to decrease the adsorption to carbon monoxide. A catalyst for an air electrode comprises 0.5-99.5 mol% of platinum (Pt); and 0.5-99.5 mol% of palladium (Pd). Preferably the platinum and the palladium are supported by a catalyst carrier material. Preferably the catalyst carrier material is at least one porous carbon selected from the group consisting of activated carbon, carbon fiber, graphite fiber and carbon nanotube; at lest one conductive polymer selected from the group consisting of poly(vinyl carbazole) and its derivative, polyaniline and its derivative, and polypyrrole and its derivative; or at least one metal oxide selected from the group consisting of tungsten oxide, titanium dioxide, nickel oxide, ruthenium oxide, tantalum oxide and cobalt oxide. |
