OPTICAL WAVEGUIDE ELEMENT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical waveguide element in which a driving voltage is further reduced, and to miniaturize the optical waveguide element and to achieve cost reduction of a driving device that uses the optical waveguide element by reducing the driving voltage.

SOLUTION: The optical waveguide element includes a thin plate 1 with a thickness of 10 μm or less and having an electro-optical effect, and at least one ridge type optical waveguide formed on the thin plate. A high refractive index film 10 having higher refractive index than the thin plate is arranged on a surface of the thin plate opposite to the surface on which the ridge type optical waveguide is formed at a position below the ridge type optical waveguide. The width of the high refractive index film is the same as that of the ridge type optical waveguide or narrower than that.
