<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a confocal microscope that achieves a compact device configuration. <P>SOLUTION: A confocal microscope includes a light source that emits excitation light that excites a sample, and a confocal optical system that guides fluorescent light generated from the sample by focusing the excitation light to the sample to an image pickup device.
