<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce waste of liquid in forced ejection incident to the contact of a recording medium with a discharge surface. <P>SOLUTION: When a sensor detects a contact of a sheet of paper with the discharge surface (S1: YES), the controller of a printer terminates the recording operation for the sheet of paper in contact with the discharge surface forcibly (S2, S3) and detects the ejection duty of ink or a pretreatment liquid for the image formed in a region of the paper in contact with the discharge surface (S4). Subsequently, the controller performs maintenance including forced ejection (S6).
