The driver assistance system (8) has a sensor that is arranged for detecting an object that is located in a rear or lateral surveillance range of the sensor. The collision probability of object is calculated when object is detected. The braking process is initiated when calculated probability of collision crosses a threshold value. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) vehicle; and (2) method for avoiding collision of vehicle with object.
