摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positive electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery capable of improving thermal stability of a battery without significantly sacrificing a battery initial capacity, and a method for producing the positive electrode active material. <P>SOLUTION: A method for producing a positive electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery comprises: a firing step; and a washing step of subjecting a lithium-containing composite oxide obtained in the firing step to washing treatment. By the method, a positive electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is obtained, the positive electrode active material comprising powder of a hexagonal lithium-containing composite oxide, which is represented by general formula: LiNi<SB POS="POST">1-x-y</SB>Co<SB POS="POST">x</SB>Ti<SB POS="POST">y</SB>O<SB POS="POST">2</SB>(where, 0&le;x&le;0.20 and 0&le;y&le;0.10 are satisfied) and has a layer structure, and having a site occupancy of metallic ions other than lithium at the 3a site of 5% or less when each site of the lithium-containing composite oxide is represented as [Li]<SB POS="POST">3a</SB>[Ni<SB POS="POST">1-x-y</SB>Co<SB POS="POST">x</SB>Ti<SB POS="POST">y</SB>]<SB POS="POST">3b</SB>[O<SB POS="POST">2</SB>]<SB POS="POST">6c</SB>. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT
